David R. Helland, DVM, MS
Dr. David R. Helland assumed ownership and operation in July of 1978. He graduated from Iowa Sate University in 1964 and holds a degree in Veterinary Pathology. He was on the faculty of Kansas State University for two years, operated a private veterinary diagnostic laboratory for four years and has served as a consultant in several laboratory forensic activities. Dr. Helland a member of several veterinary assocations, including the Greater Rockford Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. Within the community, Dr. Helland has served as Chairman of the Board of the Winnebago Unit of the American Cancer Society and is a past President of the Winnebago County Board of Health. He is a 21 year member of the Alpine Kiwanis Club of Rockford and is also a past President. He is an active member of Bathesda Covenant Church. He has two children and three grandchildren. Dr. Helland enjoys horticulture and gardening, especially his wonderful tulips, which are well known in the community. He has one dog, Riley, and a cat named Buzz.
Ed Howes, DVM
Dr. Howes is an Iowa State graduate and retired from mixed practice in Oregon, Illinois. He has worked part time at AVH since 1999. He is a Korean War Veteran. He is active in Rotary. He and his wife Shirley have five children and five grandchildren. His hobbies include rooting for the Chicago Cubs, golfing, gardening, and spending time with this grandchildren.
Grant Sanderson, DVM
Dr. Sanderson is a 1991 graduate of Rockford Lutheran High School. He attended Augustana College and is a 2003 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, and serves on the Executive Board of the Greater Rockford Veterinary Medical Association. As an Eagle Scout, Dr. Sanderson loves spending time outdoors. He enjoys all sports, both saltwater and freshwater fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Reception/ Veterinary Assistant
Nicole joined our team in April of 2011. She comes to us from Lena, IL. Growing up on a farm, she has always had a passion for animals. She enjoys gardening, cooking and spending time with her two cats Kenji and Niko. When not at the clinic, she is a Nanny for her niece and nephew.
Lawra joined our team in September of 2016. She was born in Southern California but spent 10 years in Arizona before moving to Rockford. After spending 8 years doing Dachshund rescue and working for another animal hospital, she decided that working with animals was where she wanted to stay. Lawra has 2 daughters and is a retired roller derby referee. Her "furry" babies include a pack of feisty dachshunds and an FIV+ cat.
Lynne comes to us with 30 years of experience in the non profit world. She was the Senior Director of Health and Wellness at the YMCA of Rock River Valley. She is now using her passion and skills here to welcome our clients and their pets. A mother of three spoiled cats, she knows that good nutrition and healthy living habits are important for the furry members of our family.
McKenzie joined our team in Spring of 2017. She graduated from Jefferson High in 2012 and currently attends Rock Valley College. She has been working with animals for 8 years and has a German Shepherd names Ali. In her spare time she enjoys playing ball with Ali and spending time with her friends & family.

Veterinary Assistant - Supervisor
Miranda has been with Alpine Veterinary Hospital since October of 2004. She attended Guilford High School and Rock Valley College. Though she doesn't have human children, she considers her pets as her children. Miranda’s "kids" include: a ShihTzu named Oscar and a CockaPoo named Tootsie. She also has a cat named Lupe. In her spare time she enjoys pet-sitting, shopping, and spending time with friends and family.
Heather started at Alpine Veterinary Hospital in May of 2014. She comes to us with many years of experience working in both boarding facilities and veterinary hospitals, including a multi doctor clinic in Algonquin, IL. She is one of our surgical technicians which is one of her special interests. She also loves rehabilitation and behavioral training. She has a "rescue" cat named Pussycat and they spend time out on the farm in Marengo, IL. In her spare time she enjoys reading her Bible, spending time with family and friends and also selling 31.
